The father in-law of Bashar al-Assad and the father of Asma al-Assad (Bashar’s wife) has been sanctioned by the United States Department of Treasury for aiding and abetting the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Fawaz al-Akhras, a British-Syrian cardiologist living in the UK owns several properties in the UK and is suspected of having handled Syrian government assets. He is also a director of the British Syrian Society, and was previously sanctioned by the European Union in 2012.
It has been reported that Fawaz al-Akhras, who collaborated closely with the dictatorial couple owns a property in Acton, London. Asma al-Assad was involved in government affairs including strategic economic sectors of Syria such as banking and finance. Now that the Assad regime lost power, attention to the Assad’s family assets will increase as any new Syrian government would reorganise its assets and collect the proceeds it was stolen from it by the dictatorial family.
