Israel bombs and invades Syria: Russian bases in Tartus and Latakia to stay

Since early morning Israel has has been bombing Syria and rolling its tanks in the southern parts of Syria around the Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement with Syria ,which lead to Israel withdrawing from Mount Hermon, is no longer valid. Israel began its bombing and invasion of Syria soon after the downfall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Israel targeted the Syrian rebels’ anti-aircraft systems, jets and heavy weaponry which were mostly captured from Assad’s forces and the Russians. The invasion has been justified by the Israeli Premier as a temporary measure to ward off potential attacks against Israel. Commander of the Syrian rebel forces, Abu Mohammad Jolani has not reacted to Israeli’s invasion but has previously said that his movement is not looking to fight with any neighbour and even wants peaceful relations with Israel.

Syrians have condemned Israel’s invasion as a breach of sovereignty and and an unnecessary aggression.

Meanwhile, Russian bases in Tartus and Latakia have been left nominally operational with a skeleton staff as most of the Russian personnel have left Syria. Syrian rebels have so far pledged not to storm the Russian bases and to allow them to keep operating.
