In a latest update from the Sliema body in a suitcase saga, a man has been arrested in connection with the case. Sources confirmed this to The Maltese Herald. It has also been reported that the victim died suffocated so this is a murder case.
The gruesome body found in Sliema on Monday has sent shockwaves through the nation. Speculation on the cause of death has been rife and the complete silence from the authorities is not helping this. So far no press conference has been held by the police which is the norm in such circumstances.
Most of the information has come out through unofficial sources and is patchy at best. It is generally understood that the body found in the suitcase was of a male in his 40’s. It has also been suggested that he is a foreigner and that he has tattoos on his body which are distinctive.
Initially, it was suggested that the upper parts of the body were found, including the head and torso. Later it resulted that the bottom part of the body was also found suggesting that the person was disabled and unable to walk. However, that is still only hearsay.
New information from confidential sources indicates that police are checking at Malta International Airport for departures in the past days. This may indicate that the suspect who allegedly cut up the body has left the island.
Is the dead body a foreigner or not?
Confidential sources who spoke to the Maltese Herald have indicated that the man is not necessarily foreign and that there is strict security around the mortuary. An autopsy was supposed to have been conducted but we are none the wiser on the cause of death.
Other media have stated that the man died when packets of drugs that were in his stomach burst and thus caused internal poisoning. The theory that is being propagated is that the man was a drug mule who was disabled and who was carrying drugs out of Malta. Additionally, it has been said that the man was not murdered but died a natural death although he was cut up after death with an axe.
Further information gleaned from the current investigations have revealed that a man who is suspected of cutting up the body was seen purchasing an axe and a suitcase from Naxxar. However, this information is to be treated with some skepticism.
