New details have emerged of Bashar al-Assad’s flight from Damascus to Moscow after they were leaked to Reuters by his top military officials, the previous Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, and other people close to him.
Bashar al-Assad fled Damascus on Sunday morning to a Russian airbase in Latakia without informing the people around him.From Latakia he took a plane to Moscow with its flight-radar turned off.
His last meeting official meeting before he fled was held at the Ministry of Defense with his top military officials, who told them that Russian aid was on the way and that the army hold on to its positions. He informed his media advisor, Buthaina Shaaban to meet him at his house to write a speech for him, but instead of meeting her there, he went to Damascus airport.
Bashar al-Assad deceived those around him and didn’t even tell his own brother Maher al-Assad that he was leaving. His cousins, Ihab and Eyad Makhlouf tried to flee by car to Lebanon but were shot at as they tried to drive through a checkpoint despite warnings to stop. Ehab Makhlouf was shot dead and Eyad has been wounded and captured. Ehab Makhlouf can be seen wearing the Adolf Hitler t-shirt with Assad.
Maher al-Assad has successfully fled to Moscow via a helicopter which took him to Baghdad from where he then took a plane to Moscow.
When Syrian rebels had liberated Aleppo, Bashar al-Assad requested military help from both Iran and Russia. Russia assured him that it could provide airstrikes but both declined offering more boots on the ground.
