Malta’s water polo national team achieved its first international success since clinching the EU 8 Nations Tournament in Limerick back in 2014, with a resounding victory in the SportMalta Christmas Cup. This achievement bodes well for the team’s upcoming commitments in Istanbul, where they will face Singapore and Germany in Division 2 of the World Cup 2025.
The Christmas Cup victory further solidifies Malta’s standing among Europe’s middle-tier teams, demonstrating their ability to compete with Top 16 sides like Slovenia and Slovakia. The only blemish in an otherwise stellar campaign was a narrow 18-17 loss to Portugal in a penalty shootout.
Malta’s Commanding Final Performance
The final match against Slovenia showcased Malta’s resilience and skill, particularly during the critical third session, which proved decisive in securing the 13-10 win. The first session ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw, with both sides exchanging goals. Malta led for much of the session, with Steve Camilleri’s quick brace and Zack Mizzi’s excellent backhand strike giving the hosts an edge. However, a late goal from Slovenia’s Matija Canc ensured the teams were level heading into the second session.
Camilleri continued his stellar form, netting another goal early in the second session to put Malta ahead. However, a brief lapse in aggression allowed Slovenia’s Enej Potocnik to exploit the opportunity and push the visitors into a 6-5 lead. Camilleri quickly responded, but Slovenia’s Juris Siljak ensured his side held a 7-6 advantage at halftime.
The third session was Malta’s turning point. A relentless offensive effort saw them score five unanswered goals through Matthias Azzopardi, Nikolai Zammit, Jerome Zerafa Gregory, Jake Bonavia, and Liam Galea. This remarkable display gave Malta an 11-8 lead heading into the final session.
Closing the Game with Confidence
In the last session, both teams scored twice, but Malta’s solid defense, anchored by goalkeeper Benji Busuttil, ensured Slovenia couldn’t mount a comeback. Zammit and Mizzi added the final touches to secure a well-deserved 13-10 victory.
