Labour politicians have learned nothing from the political saga of Jean Paul Sofia when they all parroted the position of their Prime Minister about not being legally able to initiate a public inquiry on Jean Paul Sofia’s death. Later on, they had to eat their words and admit they were wrong following massive public pressure.
Now, they are doing the same thing with regard to the Prime Minister’s position on Magisterial Inquiries. Prime Minister Robert Abela wants to change the deny citizens the right to open Magisterial Inquiries. The Minister of Culture agrees with this proposal.
Basically, all the current and ongoing investigations on corruption of by top government officials are being investigated under Magisterial Inquiries that were prompted by civilians: mainly the NGO Repubblika and Jason Azzopardi. Other Magisterial Inquiries were prompted by previous Opposition leader Simon Busuttil. With a dysfunctional Attorney-General and a Police Commissioner who refuse to investigate and clamp down on corruption in politics, taking away the right of citizens to prompt Magisterial Inquiries will take away that last tool in the justice system that is actually prompting investigations on high-level political corruption.
This is a perfect case of politicians legislating in their self-interest to protect themselves.
