Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was in Damascus earlier today where he held discussions with the new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. In a press conference, Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa stressed about Syria’s unity by reiterating that the weapons of all armed groups should be returned to the Ministry of Defense. He also announced that Turkey will be aiding Syria on banking and agriculture.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan started his speech by paying homage to the Syrian victims of the Ba’athist regime, and continued by saying that “The transformation of Syria into a secure, free, and prosperous country will be possible through you”. He stressed on the importance of stability of Syria and the “elimination” of any terrorist group: a direct implication to Kurdish armed groups who still refuse to disarm.
Kurdish armed groups that control the north-eastern region of Syria, namely the Syrian Democratic Forces, are refusing to disarm and integrate their forces with the new and upcoming Syrian army.
Following the press conference, the Foreign Minister and the Syrian leader conducted a photo opportunity on Mount Qasioun overlooking the Syrian capital, Damascus.
