Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says Russia and criminal organisation should not blackmail Europe with immigrants

During the North-South Summit of Saariselka in Finland, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that Russia and criminal organisations should not threaten Europe with illegal immigrants. She also emphasised on the point that immigration is a security issue and not a solidarity issue, adding also that illegal immigration in Europe is jeapordising our internal freedom of movement.

The summit was an initiative by the current EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and is meant to bring northern and southern Europe states together to discuss security issues.

The EU High Representative Kaja Kallas stated that Russia is attacking Europe via various hybrid methods, including GPS jamming, cyber-attacks, direct acts of sabotage against infrastructure, the targeting of undersea water cables and also illegal immigration.

Russia has retaliated against European sanctions by sending waves of illegal immigrants to Europe by foot through Belarus. Poland has defended its borders against Russia with a wall and a fence that is guarded by the Polish Army, and which regularly push back immigrants trying to enter from the Belarussian border.
