Finland seizes Russian oil tanker “Eagle S” that cut undersea cables

Finland has seized the Russian oil-tanker “Eagle S” after it dragged its anchor onto the undersea water cable, Estlink-5. The tanker has been towed to Porvoo where Finnish authorities will conduct their investigations onboard the ship.

This is the second case of a ship cutting European undersea water cables with the recent incident involving the Chinese bulk carrier Yi Peng 3, which cut two underwater telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea last month. Danish and Swedish authorities allowed the ship to leave after its captain refused to cooperate with their investigations.

In a recent summit in northern Europe, the EU’s High Representative Kaja Kallas has stated that Russia is conducting a hybrid war against Europe via various coercive methods including by GPS jamming, cyber-attacks, direct acts of sabotage against infrastructure, the targeting of undersea water cables and also illegal immigration.
