Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 2022 in a war of imperialist conquest, Russia started a hybrid-war against Europe to coerce it in giving up its support for Ukraine. In this hybrid-war, Russia escalated its political involvement and intervention in Europe to increase its control and influence on European governments and the European electorate.
Since February 2022, Russia threatened Europe with nuclear attacks constantly, threatened to invade and attack neighbouring countries like Poland and the Baltics, and Gazprom bragged publicly that it would freeze Europe to death. Cyber-attacks by Russian hackers increased including geo-blocking and is now cutting European telecommunications cables. China seems to be helping its Russian ally in this hybrid-war, whilst it is also conducting its own disinformation and subversive propaganda campaigns against the United States.
Inside Europe, Russia’s influence is increasing thanks to its successful disinformation campaigns, which are now also aided by the X.com platform owner Elon Musk. It is not only the far-right and Russophile eccentrics who blatantly behave as the Fifth Column of Europe that want to “normalise” relations with Russia, but also the social-democrats in Germany who prefer Ukrainian capitulation than a Russian defeat in the battlefield. French President Emmanuel Macron seems to have resigned to the suggestion of “a diplomatic exit” to the war in Ukraine, which basically means Ukraine capitulating by giving up its lost territories to Russia.
To put it concisely, Russia has forced European politicians to refrain from themselves from building a tangible alliance with Ukraine that would reflect in definitive victorious results on the battlefield. Clearly, Russia is wants to prevent Europe from being a Ukrainian ally, and thanks to its nuclear threats and it has succeeded in this aim.
European politicians didn’t use the nuclear deterrent back. French President Emmanuel Macron didn’t go through with his threats “all options on the table” weakening further his rhetoric. It’s as if NATO’s nuclear weapons don’t count and the European nuclear deterrent doesn’t exist at all: only the Russian nuclear deterrent exists. That’s not how it worked in the Cold War. When Europe’s nuclear deterrent was active, the message was that Europe and can activate a nuclear strike whenever it deems it appropriate to: leaving strategic ambiguity open. Nowadays, European politicians backtracked and the nuclear deterrent has retreated as far to “Please don’t nuke us, we don’t want a nuclear war and we don’t even want to use our own nuclear weapons.” Apparently, if European politicians say otherwise, a massive amount of disinformation and Russia propaganda would flow to Europe also thanks to Russia’s ally Elon Musk, whereby Russia would send the message that European politicians are warmongers and want to bring the world into a nuclear world war: and this despite the fact that Russia itself has been the only and single country that has made constant and regular nuclear threats against us.
Incredibly, there are still those who believe that Russia’s interests are benign. That Russia just wants Ukraine and eventually all of this would end. Yet even this kind of thinking is contradictory, warped and absurd because it means that Europe is literally giving up on its ally because it is afraid of nuclear threats and disinformation campaigns. What’s even more shocking is that Europe has cornered itself into cowardice from what is simply a criminal gang in Moscow armed with rusty-Soviet-era nuclear weapons with a failed war against its much poorer neighbour. Russia has lost more than 700,000 men and most of its military equipment to conquer a couple of oblasts in Ukraine whilst fighting a very poorly-equipped and much smaller army.
Europe isn’t even its own decision maker. The decision on whether Ukraine is able to continue fighting Russia has been outsourced to the United States. The future of the European borders will be drawn in Washington on the whims of a Miami Vice administration. Apparently, everybody is fine with this, even French President Emmanuel Macron who preaches om European independence seems to be fine with this. President Macron is still a strong supporter of Ukraine but there seems to be no end-goal in what the French President is doing.
Europe’s pro-Ukrainian alliance, all its member-countries combined have enough capabilities win a war against Russia in a couple of days. They also have the capability to put boots on the ground in Ukraine and push back Russian forces to its borders. The choice being made today by European politicians is that Russia is being allowed to redraw Europe’s borders with Washington’s backing. The precedent being introduced for the first time is that a nuclear power can coerce a people to give up its nationality and live within its borders and force Europe to agree with this.ย Despite this alarming coercion, no one seems to want do anything about it and Ukrainians are being left to fend off an imperialist war against them by themselves without any significant help from its supposed allies.
The European Union isn’t very concerned about this alarming new precedent, and it also seems to be resigned to accepting it. Undoubtedly this is the wrong choice and a choice that would lead Europe to give up its security precedents along with its nuclear deterrents. Europe is no longer in control of its security and its borders and this choice is being made willingly and consciously as opposed to deciding to go to war against Russia and absolve its aspirations for European conquest once and for all.
Europe is not even retaliating in kind and is simply allowing Russia to disrupt its politics and democracies without any opposition. even here Europe has the capabilities to disrupt the Russian regime by subversion and disinformation but, Europe keeps allowing Russia to disrupt its politics and buy its European allies all the while Europe is depicted as an aggressor through Russian disinformation.
Faced with such a serious security risk, it is the apex of delusion to believe that Russia will engage in trade with Europe in good faith if we “normalise” relations after allowing it to take Ukraine. After instituting the new precedent of allowing Russia to redraw Europe’s borders, Russia’s capabilities to further disrupt European politics and conquer new European territories will be much higher, while Europe’s security will be significantly weaker.
