AFD Leader Alice Weidel spreads fake news propagated by Elon Musk on X.com about Magdeburg attack

In a political rally in Germany, leader of the far-right AFD Alice Weidel repeated the fake news, as promoted by Elon Musk on his platform X.com, that the Magdeburg Christmas Market attack was conducted by an Islamic terrorist. The Christmas Market attacker of Magdeburg was an Islamophobe who supported far-right political parties in Europe, and was a fan of Israel and Elon Musk. He was a doctor from Saudi Arabia who fled to Germany in 2006.

Five people were killed as the attacker rammed a car on people at a Christmas Market.

Elon Musk has been disseminating the fake news that the Magdeburg attack was a Islamic terrorism. The attacker was influenced by far-right propaganda as evidence by his account on X.com. Elon Musk deleted the account of the attacker on X.com and removed many of the attacker’s tweets before he restored the account again with the deleted tweets.

Elon Musk also retweed a post of an influencer which claimed that the attacker had, for all these years, only pretended to be an Islamophobe and was actually an Islamic terrorist. No evidence was brought for this conspiracy theory. He also retweed a post about the attack by a far-right and racist Polish news outlet called Visegrad24.

Visgrad24 uploaded a video of the attacker being arrested falsely claiming that he said “Allah hu akbar”. The audio of the video is difficult to decipher but “Alles Klar” in German is actually more consistent with the audio. Visegrad24 is also known to spread fake news and disinformation.

Community Notes by X.com were inactive on this case as Elon Musk tried to distort publicly-available information and propagate a false narrative.

  1. False news in media outlets is becoming a major headache. I think that some kind of remedy similar to our defamation laws needs to be put in place in Europe to protect against false news. Anyone disseminating news which can be proven in court to be false, should be made to pay sums commensurate with the exposure the news is given. If what you report here is true, X should be fined billions and have it’s service suspended in the EU for a period of time. That way, dissemination of false news will cause pain to whomever willingly misinforms. Free speech is no license to misinform.

Posing as an Islamophobe to stay under the radar is very plausible.
