Diplomatic sources have informed The Maltese Herald that Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan is pushing his Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan as his successor. President Erdogan doesn’t intend to context elections in 2028 making this term potentially his last.
Foreign Affairs Minister Hakan Fidan, who was previously the head of Turkey’s National Intelligence Service, is a strong Erdogan loyalist and was one of his most crucial backers in the failed coup against him inย 2016. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in June last year.
As a government minister, Hakan Fidan has marked his career with an early success of historic proportions considering that Turkey backed the Syrian rebels which ousted Bashar al-Assad from power. Lately, he was in Doha discussing Syria where he was met with a smiling Emir of Qatar.
Hakan Fidan will have to battle internal rivals in the Justice and Development Party from factions who want their party to steer away from Erdogan’s grip and influence.
