In an interview with Al-Jazeera, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Iran’s presence in Syria didn’t prevent “a big genocide in Gaza.” He was replying to question on criticism aimed at Turkey for breaking the “Axis of Resistance”: the Shi’ite militant alliance lead by Iran including Hezbollah and Hamas. The Turkish Minister also added that Turkey will do all it can its power toe help the people of Gaza.
On the Kurdish controlled regions of northeastern Syria he said that the YPG are an extension of the PKK and pose a serious security threat to Turkey. The EU is supporting Turkey on this position, but President Emmanuel Macron has a position which is more supportive of the Kurds. A build-up of Turkish troops is ongoing in Turkey on the border with Kobani city.
The recently appointed Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, is reportedly being prepared as President Tayyip Erdogan’s successor.
