EU Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen says “Syrian unity should be respected”

Earlier today in a press conference with Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan, the European Union Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen stated that “Syrian unity should be respected, and minorities protected.” The EU Commissioner President added that “Turkey’s legitimate security concerns must be addressed.” She also hinted that sanctions on Syria by the EU would be removed once the security situation in Syria is stabilised.

The statement undermines any hopes for Kurdish independent forces to receive backing for a separatist state by the EU. Kurdish commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces made no references to a separatist state in his statement after the fall of the Assad regime, but the SDF are refusing to lay down their weapons and integrate with the regular security forces.

The EU Commissioner President added that the relationship between Europe and Turkey is being strengthened both politically and economically with increasing trade. She concluded by announcing that a new customs union is being planned as trade barriers are to be reduced between the EU and Turkey.
