The US peace-keeping forces in the Kurdish controlled north-eastern Syria, operating under the mission name “Operation Resolve”, have begun building a military base in Kobani. Previously, the commander of the Kurdish armed Syrian Democratic Forces Mazloum Abdi proposed the Syrian government to hand over the Kobani-Turkish border to US forces.
The SDF is refusing to disarm and integrate with the official Syrian army as it fights the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army. The SDF is currently fighting the SNA in Manbij, and other areas. Turkey is also threatening Kurdish armed groups as it describes them a security threat, with the Europe Union and Germany supporting Turkey in this policy.
Last week, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi travelled to Damascus with a US Chinook helicopter to hold negotiations with Syrian Leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. The meeting was not publicised and the discussions were kept secret, however news and information about the meeting were leaked to the press.
During the meeting, the Syrian leader demanded the SDF to disarm and integrate with the official Syrian army, no federalisation, and 80% of the oil revenues. Mazloum Abdi counter-proposed with no disarmament before the introduction of a constitution that guarantees Kurdish and minorities rights, effective dismantling of the Syrian National Army (Turkish backed armed group), 50% of the oil revenues and an autonomous government with a direct remit over internal security, excluding border security. Mazloum Abdi left Damascus without an agreement, but sources privy to the talks are saying that a deal is very possible.
