Germany supports Turkey in its push against Kurdish armed forces but warns against Turkish invasion

The German Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock visited Turkey last Friday where she met with her counterpart, Hakan Fidan. Germany is taking the EU’s line on supporting Turkey’s “security concerns” regarding Kurdish armed groups that control northeastern Syria including parts of the border, namely the Syrian Democratic Forces. The Turkish army has gathered on the Syria border near the Kurdish city of Kobani while pro-Turkish forces are righting the Kurds in Syria.

The SDF is refusing to disarm and integrate its troops with the new and upcoming Syrian army. The new Syrian Defense Marhaf Abu Qasra has warned that Syrian national unity will not be compromised with federalism.

Germany stands behind Turkey in its demand for Kurdish forces to disarm, however, the German Foreign Minister also warned Turkey that Germany is against any Turkish incursion into Syrian territory as it supports Syria’s national integrity. France is taking a different position from the EU and Germany by emphasising instead that the Kurds should be involved in the discussions about the future leadership of the country.

Recently, two Kurdish journalists have been killed by a Turkish drone in yet another potential case of Turkey deliberately targeting Kurdish journalists.
