Syrian rebels are still currently in the process of freeing inmates from the notorious Sednaya Prison, know simply as “the slaughterhouse”. The massive prison complex functioned as a concentration camp for political prisoners, and was used to torture and kill up to 30,000 individuals since 2011. The prison complex has been abandoned by its officers and administration and the rebels are gradually opening up the dungeon complex with many prisoners still locked underground.
Torture rooms have been found were bodies were hanged and also crushed into machines. Some inmates are being freed with their body parts missing while some teenage girls who have been freed have no place to go due to the fact that they were born inside the prison.
As thousands of prisoners are being freed across Syria, doctors are rushing to spread awareness about refeeding syndrome. Many prisoners are severely malnourished, placing them at risk of death if they consume food beyond what their weakened bodies can currently handle.
Previously, defectors provided the press and international organisations of harrowing pictures of Syria’s prisons where tens of thousands were brutally tortured and killed for their politics.
Following the Syrian Revolution, Syrians have begun the process of rebuilding their country from scratch with 90% of the population below the poverty line and and whole cities that need to be rebuilt. The reintegration of political prisoners with society will be just one of the many process that Syrians will be tackling in the coming days and weeks. Meanwhile, the roads from Turkey to Syria were jam-packed with vehicles of Syrians travelling back to their homes.
