Canada’s Prime Minister is set to resign: press reports

Press reports citing sources close to the Canadian Prime Minister have told the press that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is planning to resign as head of the Liberal Party later today. This news follows the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who resigned over disagreements with the Prime Minister over the rising government’s expenditure. Chrystia Freeland was one of Justin Trudeau’s closest allies in the Liberal Party.

No further details were provided about the Premier’s resignation as supposedly this information is still embargoed before an official announcement is made.

Canadians are rapidly losing trust in their Prime Minister, with the Conservative opposition party, gaining up to 44% of the electorate’s support according to a CBC poll. Canadians are facing cost-of-living crisis after soaring inflation and a housing crisis with people struggling to pay rent and young people struggling to purchase their first property. The number of Canadians leaving Canada for the United States is also increasing.

If Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns from the leadership of his party, he would also have to give up his premiership. Elections in Canada are meant to be held in next October, but in the case of Justin Trudeau’s resignation, the Liberal Party would have to announce a new Prime Minister and form a new government. If the Liberal Party fails to form a new government, early elections would have to be called.
