Cocaine nights, bikini photos at the Phoenicia Hotel, and a history with the Labour Party: meet the new prosecutors at the Office of the Attorney-General

Yesterday, we released the story about the Labour government filling the Office of the Attorney-General with Labour Party loyalists. We also revealed that the Prime Minister is in direct contact with the Attorney-General, Viktoria Buttigieg.

Over the course of the last two years, at least 14 new prosecutors have been engaged with the Office of the Attorney General. Most of these prosecutors are in their twenties and have been carefully selected according to their political loyalties. The interview process was not followed according to procedure and some applicants who failed the interview were engaged nonetheless. Other applicants who qualified for an interview, were rejected an interview session over technical and IT issues relating to their application.

The new prosecutors include young lawyers who enjoy their weekend nights taking cocaine with their friends in Valletta, women with bikini-photos at luxurious hotels, previous Labour Party election candidates, and also a previous Labour Party local councillor.

One applicant held a meeting with Justice Minister Jonathan Attard before being engaged.

The Maltese Herald has identified and profiled all the individuals who were hired as prosecutors by the Office of the AG and has viewed their records on social media. We refrain from publishing names and details of these individuals because we believe that prosecutors should retain their right of anonymity for security reasons. On the other hand, we find the intentional hijacking of the Office of the Attorney-General by the Labour government as an alarming attack on the independence of the Office of the Attorney General, and a serious threat to the rule of law.

Like the judiciary, the Office of the Attorney General must uphold the highest standards, with prosecutors expected to exercise discretion and embody a sense of authority. It is deeply concerning that some newly appointed prosecutors lack the serious and mature demeanor required for those tasked with fearlessly combating organised crime and delivering impartial justice
