The devastating wildfires have so far taken at least 11 lives, with over 153,000 people ordered to leave Los Angeles in the United States.
A total of over 21,000 acres was burnt from the Palisades Fire, and it is 8% contained. Another fire, Eaton Fire, burnt more than 14,000 acres, and it is only 3% contained.
On Thursday, Los Angeles County’s public health authority declared a local health emergency as deteriorating air quality from smoke and ash created an immediate, long-term health hazard.
Governor Gavin Newsom faced criticism over the preparedness and response of his state. Authorities reported water shortages hindering firefighting efforts and a major reservoir out of commission upon the outbreak.
More than 55,000 signed a petition calling for the resignation of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass over “failure” to take action against wildfires sweeping the city.
The National Guard has been deployed to help battle wildfires as forecasts predict strong Santa Ana winds will return to worsen conditions.
