ADPD-The Green Party believes that Malta’s governance is under serious strain due to rampant corruption and lack of accountability undermining the country’s institutions. In a press conference held this morning outside the Office of the Prime Minister, Deputy Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo attacked the Labour government for its complete disregard for scandals involving misappropriation of social security funds to phantom jobs with political appointees.
This Government has not only allowed this abuse to fester but has tried to actively cover it up, declared Cacopardo, with scandals involving Clayton Bartolo, Rosianne Cutajar, and Justyne Caruana while in the ministry. He called the need for accountability at all levels, including among public officials, who have served to enable abuse.
Chairperson Sandra Gauci added more woes to this worry list: the controversial appointment of Johann Buttigieg as chief executive officer at the Planning Authority despite being associated with the developers’ lobby, and still the investigations ongoing at Project Green because of suspected nepotism, and the so-called direct order of €1 million for the Cospicua car park.
ADPD insisted that good governance in Malta can only be restored by means of transparency and accountability, with a promise for increased pressure on authorities over systemic corruption.
