During the weekend, students in Belgrade, Serbia have continued their protests in favour of rule-of-law and the independence of the judiciary in front of the Constitutional Court. Protesters are demanding justice for the 14 victims who were killed following the rooftop collapse of a train-station in Novi Sad. Protests were also held in Kragujevac and Novi Sad. Protesters are also blaming corrupt government officials which lead to the tragedy in a background of rampant corruption in government and the public services.
Protests in Serbia have become more common and more numerous since the incumbent pro-Russian President Alaksandar Vucic declared election victory in 2023 in an election riddled with fraud and irregularities. However, the Serbian Opposition is still fragmented and unable to mount a cohesive and national political campaign against the government that could challenge its power.
