Unconfirmed press reports state Hamas and Israel are close to strike a deal

Updated: AlJazeera (Arabic) is also reporting that Us President-elect Donald Trump sent a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him to accept a deal.

Unconfirmed press reports suggest that Egyptian sources have stated Hamas and Israel are close to reaching a peace deal. The deal involves Hamas handing over the hostages to Israel whilst retaining power in Gaza.

Israel had previously insisted that it won’t allow Hamas to remain in power and is building a permanent occupation zone in the north of Gaza. There are no official details about the deal. Egypt, Qatar and the United States are involved in brokering the deal between the parties.

Yesterday, US President Joe Biden said in a press conference that his administration is pressuring the parties in the conflict to urgently strike a deal before the US President’s term ends on January 20th.

Up to 100 Israeli hostages remain in Hamas’ custody, with many feared dead or missing.
