The Nationalist Party is insisting that Prime Minister Robert Abela immediately publishes his declaration of assets for 2023, along with those of his Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries. The party described the prolonged delay as “scandalous”, considering that such declarations remain unpublished more than one year beyond when they were due.
In a statement, Shadow Minister for Justice Karol Aquilina accused the Prime Minister of creating an environment of secrecy and impunity, as these documents are fundamental to making sure the light of transparency and accountability shines in on governance. It is through such declarations that suspected abuses of power, unexplained wealth, and unethical practices such as bribery, corruption, nepotism and conflict of interest are exposed, the Nationalist Party said.
The party also points out a historical timeline of asset declaration submissions in Parliament, noting the inconsistencies and delays in recent years. While declarations for previous years were eventually submitted–some as late as 18 months after the end of the reporting year–the absence of any record for 2023 remains a significant concern.
This demand by the Opposition highlights very well the principle of public accountability in the finances of all elected representatives.
The Nationalist Party insists that timely disclosure of such information is fundamental to upholding good governance and public trust.
