The number of first-time asylum applications in the European Union significant decreased in October 2024, with 86,945 applications registered, down 24% compared to the same period in 2023, which recorded 114,890 applications.
The largest number of applications came from Syria with 15,815, followed by Venezuela with 7,305, Afghanistan with 5,870, and Turkey with 4,640. Germany, Spain, Italy, and France accounted for 73% of all first-time applicants in EU.
Malta’s strategic location in the Mediterranean has always made it a destination for migrants and asylum applicants crossing from North Africa. Some of the possible reasons which could explain such a decline in applications in recent times, include variation of routes of migration, border policcies of the EU, and regional stability.
As a matter of fact, the EU remains confronted with asylum-system and migration-management issues in an effort to balance humanitarian obligations with the security of its borders.
