Russia loses the Syrian port of Tartus

The new Syrian government has terminated the contract with the Russian company Stroytransgaz that manages the port of Tartus. The Director of Customs of Tartus, Riad Judi said that all revenues from the port will be used in the interests of the Syrian state. The Syrian government’s decision follows a recent decision banning all imports from Russia.

In 2019, the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad signed an investment agreement with Stroytransgaz for a period of 49 years. Russia intended to build a commercial harbour in Tartus whilst taking revenues from the harbour’s exports. Previously, Stroytransgaz claimed it was to invest up to $500 million in Tartus. Russian naval warships were also refused entry in the port earlier this week.

Russia still has several other military bases in Syria including the Khmeimim air base.
