Labour’s depravity against journalists and the press will cost it dearly

As the Labour Party moves backward to change its stance on the freedom of speech, the Labour Party will drop its legacy for the improvement of civil rights. Abortion will be the last stage where Labour can milk this legacy at the ballot box as the younger generations replace the older conservatives. In a couple of years, abortion won’t even remain a controversial issue just as gay marriage is no longer considered a problem.

This should be the point where even the crooks inside Labour suddenly realise they have gone too far as they change the Labour Party into something which goes against its inherent and historical roots. Corruption was never a problem in the ideological discourse of the Party, especially because it was also justified by class-conflict discourse, but dropping the legacy of civil rights is a different matter. The Labour Party has historically legaislated in favour of civil rights including the removal of many restrictions over free speech, such as the removal of criminal libel. Once the Labour Party backtracks on this policy in legislation, it will be subject to the same accusations it has made over the years against the Nationalist Party.

It’s going to be ridiculous as we publish all the attacks the Labour Party used to make against the Nationalist Party over free speech. In many ways, the Nationalist Party is already ahead of Labour on policies on free speech. Apart from their excellent proposals on libel laws, PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut wants to decriminalise all offensive discourse.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has largely failed to uphold the party’s legacy and adapt it to the times. Yet again, the fundamental problem remains the same. As he remains bogged down a Devil’s Pact, he will be unable to govern effectively while the Labour Party continues to decay.

One response to “Labour’s depravity against journalists and the press will cost it dearly”

This is just one of the latest reform proposals that favour criminals with other recent legislative reforms including the anti-money laundering reforms. Not to mention the time it wastes fighting journalists and its critics. […]
