US tariffs on the EU can negatively impact Maltese exports

Malta could be negatively impacted by US tariffs against the EU especially in the microchip sector which in Malta is dominated by one single manufacturer: ST Microelectronics. In 2023 Malta exported to the US a total of $46.4 million of electronic circuits and microchips to the Untied States. The total amount of exports to the US in 2023 were around $136 million mostly consisting of electronic equipment.

The ST Microelectronics factory in Kirkop employs up to 1,800 people but it also engages many local contractors for services such as maintenance and construction. ST Microelectronics is a European multinational microchip and producer and it has been operating in Malta since 1981 (previously SGS Microelettronica).

President Trump has stated that he will absolutely be imposing tariffs on the European Union after the EU “treated the US very badly”.
