The US Department of State deletes its online page on Taiwan and uploads one paragraph in support of the One China Policy

The US Department of State has removed all the content from its online page about Taiwan and replaced it with one single paragraph stating the US support in favour of the “One-China Policy”. The One-China Policy was started by President Richard Nixon in 1972 and it exclusively recognises Beijing’s China as the only legitimate Chinese state. The One-China Policy was formalised under President Jimmy Carter who in 1979 ended official recognition of Taiwan to follow up with official recognition of the “People’s Republic of China”.

Along the years, the US still maintained an unofficial relationship with Taiwan. Taiwan purchases most of its weapons from the US, and the US is Taiwan’s second largest trading partner after China. Under the previous US Biden administration, Taiwan also had the support and backing of the United States over China’s incursions of Taiwan’s maritime territory.

On the other hand, President Trump accuses Taiwan of stealing its manufacturing microchips industry. Taiwan is one of the biggest producers of microchips and semiconductors thanks to its flagship company called Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC).

China has made it clear multiple times that it wants to integrate Taiwan with its territory while it has been escalating its sabotage and aggressive grey zone tactics against its much smaller neighbour.
