Starting last Friday, the new Syrian Army launched multiple operations along the Syrian border with Lebanon to secure it against Hezbollah militants. Under the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian-Lebanese border was used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons, although the border was also heavily used for drug smuggling.
The Syrian Army fired into Lebanon targeting Hezbollah militants and captured strategic points along the Syrian border including the hills of Akum in the Al-Qusair region. However, by Saturday evening the Lebanese President Joseph Aoun ordered the Lebanese Army to retaliate by firing back at the Syrian Army. The Lebanese Army’s actions are intended to stop the Syrian Army from firing into Lebanon.
The Syrian Army is still firing rockets and shells unto Hezbollah in Lebanon as of writing.
Israel also conducted several airstrikes against Syrian military installations in the South of the country saying it targeted a “Hamas” base. Israel is currently occupying Mount Hermon in Syria in what it say is a permanent occupation.
