In the Nationalist Party’s efforts to further prove me right about how out of touch it is with the current political situation, yesterday, the Nationalist Party held a political meeting exclusively about sports.
I’m sure the meeting was planned before the government rushed to reform the law on Magisterial Inquiries, but this is not the energy we need from the Opposition.
The Opposition Leader could have held another meeting in a different location, and if he did so, he would have conditioned the agenda of the press headlines for the rest of week. Instead, the Nationalist Party is now promoting a new subsidy bill in Parliament aimed at addressing cost of living.
I don’t think anyone is actually paying attention to the Nationalist Party about its economic policies. It’s also difficult to compete when the ruling-party has the public purse under its control, and I don’t think anyone is even expecting the Nationalist Party to win the elections on economic issues.
With the Nationalist Party trying to project itself as “a positive” political party, it is actually playing into the hands of the government by acting as a sort of controlled opposition which restricts its discourse on matters that don’t actually threaten the ruling-party. This is making the situation even worse with the Labour Party becoming more emboldened to walk all over the rule-of-law and tighten its control over state institutions. It is also making the Nationalist Party looking completely out of touch.
