An eagled-eyed spotter of Hurd’s Bank has noticed that Falzon & Falzon’s Santa Maria oil tanker, has been taking oil in Hurd’s Bank from the Liberian flagged oil-tanker named Hamsi. Hamsi is one of the oil-tankers involved in Libyan diesel smuggling from Benghazi as listed by the UNSC report.
This information has been confirmed by multiple sources. We did not confirm with Falzon & Falzon what kind of oil they are purchasing via Hamsi.
Falzon & Falzon were the biggest Maltese buyers of smuggled oil from Libya when the civil-war broke out in 2011, but their activities were curtailed by the authorities in 2013. Darren Debono became the biggest Maltese buyer of smuggled Libyan oil until he was arrested by the Italian authorities in 2017. A recently published UNSC report states that Libyan oil trafficking in Hurd’s Bank is regular once again.
