The Opposition Leader made yet another noiseless speech yesterday morning following news of the disastrous state of the Nationalist Party at the polls. Once again, his speech yesterday had very little to do with the ongoing political discourse, and the PN seems to be completely out of touch following a major national protest held yesterday in Valletta.
Bernard Grech is trying to project the Nationalist Party as the party which will address the people’s concerns over the cost of living. PN is proposing to do this by adding more similar measures adopted by the Labour government, such as more tax breaks and even more subsidies. Despite supposedly being the political party of right-wing economics, PN can’t seem to understand that subsidies are inherently inflationary, but this is not them major problem here.
The message isn’t getting across because it is unconvincing, but even worse is that these policies are not essentially the root of our problems. Many of those who find it difficult to rent or purchase a property also see a Nationalist Party in bed with property developers who have created a lucrative market for themselves, and a housing problem for many others. On the other hand, pensioners have received significant increases while PN still refuses to proclaim itself in favour of increasing the minimum wage: even here Labour is ahead with the populist Deputy-Leader Alex Saliba already proclaiming he is in favour of raising it.
Yet, somehow, no one is telling these things to Bernard Grech as he still expects to be seen as the socialist alternative.
The electorate is getting alienated from politics because they are becoming ever more aware that corruption and rent-seeking has eaten away at politics and policies in general. Labour is still ahead by a wide margin and the Nationalist Party is out of touch.
What’s especially worrying is that Bernard Grech, like Supreme Leader Robert Abela, seems to be blaming everyone but himself for his catastrophic and consistent failures. Yesterday, at the end of the meeting, Bernard Grech said that although PN is not winning, PN is moving slowly towards its goal. Then he blamed people for voting for third parties for PN’s lack of progress.
