The Nationalist Party reminds us again it will issue more subsidies

The Nationalist Party seems to be on a political campaign right now to advertise a long series of subsidies as part of its potential future government policy. These are mostly policies similar to the ongoing subsidy-policies of the Labour Party. Yesterday, the Nationalist Party announced a proposal to give subsidies to first-time home buyers. The press conference was held by PN Opposition MPs Ivan Castillo, Bernice Bonello u Graziella Attard Previ.

We had a big story this week in which we reported that the Nationalist Party is being pushed to campaign with this Labour-like policy-stance by a growing faction inside PN which wants to steer away from the rule-of-law crisis. The Opposition Leader Bernard Grech was not presented to protest held on Sunday by civil society groups, but most PN MPs seem to have been present including Adrian Delia.

I’m pretty sure that no young person looking to buy a property watched this press conference and said, “I’m going to vote for the Nationalist Party”. However, I’m not so sure why the Nationalist Party keeps failing to understand the main challenges it faces against the Labour government. Not to mention that the Nationalist Party is proposing a similar economic policy to Labour’s current economic policy, and just like Labour they intend to throw subsidies at every problem instead of thinking about actual strategic solutions that will solve our problems on a long-term basis.

The Nationalist Party is refusing to engage in a discourse and a narrative that addresses the root of our problems: the crisis in rule-of-law is mainly attributable to the rule of-law crisis and that enables organised crime, the collusion of politicians with organised criminals and a ruling-party being captured by its donors who are mostly construction developers and big hoteliers. This is our rent-seeking paradise which wasted our society’s well-being, natural environment and now our democratic institutions. The Nationalist Party intends to patch this up, but doesn’t want to get radical about it.

We’ve been repeating these warnings over and over, but the Nationalist Party has ignored them for so long that its approach to politics is now resembling that of a third-party: holding press conferences about policies no one reads or cares about.

To put it in very simplistic words, the fundamental problem here is that the Nationalist Party is failing to capture’s society Zeitgeist. And sadly, we are the ones who will ultimately be affected by this because if the PN keeps it up, weโ€™ll have to endure another five years of Labour.
