Journalists threatened and followed outside court during Ħal Safi drugs heist arraignment

Journalists and cameramen covering the arraignment in relation to the Ħal Safi drugs robbery were threatened, insulted, and intimidated outside the Law Courts on Wednesday.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) confirmed that the family members of the accused threatened and filmed two journalists and a cameraman while carrying out their work. In another incident, the same individuals followed another journalist and insulted them as they were leaving the court building.

Condemning such intimidations, the IĠM expressed solidarity with the threatened journalists and emphasised the risks that media practitioners expose themselves to while on duty. “This is a sobering reminder of the real risks faced by journalists in their work,” the institute stated.

While thanking the police for the prompt response and the security measures taken during and after the hearing, the IĠM called on the police to initiate criminal proceedings against those behind the threats and harassment.
