Jason Azzopardi remains, to this day, the leading Opposition figure against the Labour government, with the Labour Party persistently continuing its calls for his condemnation. The Labour Party has stepped up its war of w0rds against Jason Azzopardi since late last year after he filed a number of Magisterial Inquiries requests.
Recently, the Labour Party demanded the Nationalist Party to disassociate from Jason Azzopardi. This is the equivalent to the government asking the Opposition to stop doing any opposition altogether, but it also reminds me of similar calls the Labour Party used to make to the Nationalist Party about Daphne Caruana Galizia. For those who pay well attention to politics, know very well that Jason Azzopardi is being more effective opposing the government than the Nationalist Party. As expected, the Labour Party’s favourite propagandist is in strong agreement with Labour’s demand.
The Nationalist Party’s leadership also seems to be agreeing with the Labour Party and is, overall, more inclined to distance itself from Jason Azzopardi and his cause, as it has already been doing. PN is organising a protest against the government this Sunday, but corruption is only one of the themes of the protest. The PN leader didn’t even attend the protest at which Jason Azzopardi gave a speech. Most of the Nationalist MPs including Adrian Delia were present.
For the sake of argument, if the PN is trying a more pragmatic strategy to win the government, it is not working. Additionally, it is hurting the party even more by making it appear as though it is opportunistically allowing Jason Azzopardi to fight battles that it should be fighting itself.
What’s worse is that this is creating more hatred and divisiveness in politics. The Labour government is refusing to let the institutions work by changing the rules whilst simultaneously condemning and attacking an Opposition figure. This is not conventional democratic party politics, but textbook criminal authoritarianism.
On the other hand, the Nationalist Party should stand up for the moment and take a lead in this fight. The fundamental root of our economic and social problems are derived from the abuse of power which is clouding government policy and poisoning of state institutions. No amount of subsidies or “positive proposals” will solve this.
