US Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled meeting with EU High Representative, but met Hungary’s Foreign Minister instead

On the 26th of February, the EU’s High Representative and Vice-President of the EU Commission, Kaja Kallas travelled to Washington for a scheduled meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The meeting was cancelled when the Vice-President was already in Washington but no details were provided for the cancellation. The Secretary of State had met the EU’s Vice-President Kallas once at the Munich Security Conference.

Earlier this week on the 4th March, the US Secretary of State welcomed Hungary’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó, to his office in Washington. The Hungarian Foreign Minister told the US Secretary that Europe is building a coalition against “peace” in Ukraine. The Us Secretary of state released a brief statement following the meeting stating it is urgent to end the war in Ukraine and that the US and Hungary discussed cooperation on energy and defense.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is the first European Foreign Minister to have held an official meeting with the US Secretary of State in Washington following President Donald Trump’s inauguration on 20th January. The US administration keeps consolidating its re-alignment of global alliances by turning away from its traditional Western allies whilst embracing rivals and dictatorships.
