The Malta Basketball Association (MBA) Disciplinary Commissioner has issued suspensions to Hibernians player Derek Brown and Starlites JSD coach Paul Ferrante. This is following separate disciplinary cases arising from incidents during the recent BOV Knock Out Final between Starlites JSD and Hibernians on March 2, 2025.
Derek Brown Receives One-Year Suspension for Social Media Comments
Derek Brown has been handed a one-year suspension from all MBA activities after being found guilty of making serious social media allegations against game officials. The comments, which quickly went viral, were deemed to have spread false rumors of corruption.
During the disciplinary proceedings, Brown admitted that his posts were written in frustration after his team’s defeat in the final. He expressed regret and apologized to MBA officials, insisting that he had no intention of tarnishing the game’s reputation.
Despite his apology, the Disciplinary Commissioner ruled that the severity of the allegations warranted a significant sanction. As a result, Brown is suspended from all MBA-related activities for 12 months and is prohibited from entering or approaching any MBA event venues during this period.
Additional Three-Game Suspension and Fine for Separate Offense
In a separate disciplinary case, Brown was also found guilty of making social media posts targeting the Malta Basketball Association itself. While he claimed the posts were misinterpreted due to missing punctuation, the Disciplinary Commissioner ruled that they still constituted a serious offense.
For this violation, Brown was suspended for an additional three games, fined €100, and similarly prohibited from attending MBA events during this suspension.
Paul Ferrante Suspended for March 2025
Starlites JSD coach Paul Ferrante has also been sanctioned following the Knock Out Final. After admitting to misconduct, Ferrante was handed a one-month suspension from all MBA activities.
As per the ruling, he is banned from coaching, attending games, or being present at any MBA event venues throughout March 2025.
Final Rulings and Appeals Process
All three suspensions are final and enforceable under MBA regulations, though the individuals involved retain the right to appeal through the appropriate MBA procedures.
With these decisions, the MBA aims to reinforce the importance of discipline and respect within Maltese basketball, setting a firm precedent for conduct both on and off the court.
