Following the signing of the Integration Agreement between the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian government, SDF spokesperson Ferhad Shami clarified key aspects of the agreement. Ferhad Shami denied rumours that HTS fighters have entered SDF-controlled areas and that all checkpoints in the north-east of Syria are still manned by the SDF. There are no changes to the troops guarding the oil fields and prisons holding ISIS terrorists.
The SDF spokesperson also confirmed that the agreement came through mediation by the United States which acted as a broker. He also added thattThe agreement is aimed at halting Turkish incursions and attacks in the northeast of Syria. Turkish airstrikes in the north-east of Syria have in fact stopped. There seems to be no fighting in the Tishrin Dam area which was often a target of Turkish airstrikes in the past weeks. The displaced people of Afrin will also be returning to their homes.
The SDF spokesperson concluded that the SDF are currently being pressured to sign peace agreements and apologised for their “shortcomings”. He also said that these are preliminary agreements and that future committees will clarify its work.
SDF Leader Mazloum Abdi was more optimistic saying that the agreement is “a real opportunity to build a new Syria that embraces all its components and ensures good neighbourliness”. Syrians across the country celebrated the agreement.
