Nearly 100kg of suspected cocaine seized at Malta Freeport in joint police and customs operation

A major drug bust at Malta Freeport on Wednesday afternoon led to the seizure of approximately 98 kilograms of suspected cocaine. The operation was carried out by the police in collaboration with Customs Department officials.

The drugs were discovered hidden inside a shipping container arriving from Guayaquil, Ecuador, and destined for the port of Genoa, Italy. The container, which was carrying boxes of frozen prawns, raised suspicion during a routine inspection by Customs officers. Further checks led to the discovery of four bags containing the suspected illicit substance.

An inquiry into the case has been launched and is being led by Magistrate Joe Mifsud. Authorities continue to investigate the shipment and its intended recipients.
