Uncertainty still hangs over possible role of Western troops in Ukraine

Following a report by The Sunday Times reporting that a “Coalition of the Willing” is organising a peace-keeping force for Ukraine, uncertainty remains over the role this force will assume. The Coalition of the Willing includes France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Turkey and a contingent of up to 30,000 troops is being planned, according to The Sunday Times. Defence Ministers of this new alliance will be discussing further details of their new mission next Thursday in London.

The small combined military force will probably be assigned to guard strategic locations such as harbours and infrastructure, monitor potential fighting at the border and provide training to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It is not clear whether this military alliance will be able to engage against Russian forces if attacked.

Russia is opposing the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine, but French President Emmanuel Macron said that this decision does not depend on Moscow. The peace-keeping force would only be deployed following a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
