Nothing new came out from the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting yesterday, as major European decisions on Ukraine are being decided by who has the most military might in Europe: namely France and the United Kingdom. Both of these countries are proposing to send their troops to Ukraine as a security guarantee, gut their future role is still unclear.
Europe’s position on Ukraine is being shaped by discussions held between France and the UK who are pledging to lead Ukraine’s security guarantees and more details will be discussed by Defence Ministers on Thursday in London. Australia, Canada and Turkey are also involved in these meetings as they also consider to send their troops to Ukraine. Both UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have held meetings in their capitals with the pro-Ukrainian alliance effectively moving major decision-making on Ukraine and European security to their respective capitals.
Newly appointed Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger was also greeted for the first-time by many of her European colleagues. Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Borg also held his first encounter with the Austrian Minister at the meeting.
