Yesterday, in a press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the Russian frontline in Ukraine as “Ukraine’s border”. She made her comments in reply to a question about the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant located in the south-east of Ukraine along with the Dniper river. Russia took control of the nuclear power station in 2022 and kidnapped the children of Ukrainian staff working at the site in order to blackmail them. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is also the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
President Trump has made multiple statements saying that he will be calling President Vladimir Putin later today to divide Ukraine’s assets including the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. There is no indication that Ukraine has approved of these talks or will agree to anything that is decided by President Trump and President Putin. President Zelensky’s statement last night was focused on new weapons deliveries and the build-up of Ukraine’s defence infrastructure and industry. President Zelensky also reiterated that it was clear that President Putin was not interested in peace and that it was Russia that it is continuing its war on Ukraine.
US foreign policy on Ukraine and Russia is aimed at pressuring Ukraine to capitulate and hand over lost territories to Russia, whilst also attempting to extract resources from Ukraine for the United States including mineral rights deals. President Trump has also confirmed he is discussing Russia’s military plans with Vladimir Putin while supporting the Russian army to make further military gains against Ukraine.
