Yesterday, following the publication of this article on the deportees who were also suspects of the Identity Malta Id-Card racket, a government official sent me a message to reassure me that these witnesses will be sought to testify to the Court online via webcam. Supposedly, this should have been reassuring to the fact that the government is downplaying a very extensive racket at Identity Malta instead of ensuring its own interests as a public body.
Public entities under the Labour government are not ensuring their or the public’s interests. Instead of trying to cover-up and downplay fraud, public entities should seek their interests by seeking good functionality, and suing and litigating to recapture lost funds and reputation. This is also why witnesses are being deported only to be chased again by webcam: there is a lack of interest and a lack of initiative in a context of dysfunction.
