While the government is trying to downplay the Identity Malta scandal, where public officials ran a racket of fraudulent ID cards to third-country nationals, it may be good to remember that the investigation was prompted by Jason Azzopardi. There are also signs that the government was not very enthusiastic in seeing a fully-fledged case and investigation to go through on the case.
Strangely, the Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri approved the deportation of two third-country nationals who defrauded Identity Malta, even though they had not yet testified in court. On the other hand, those who were politically responsible for the scandal, tried to divert attention to the wrong places in order to cover themselves.
The Labour government can’t be trusted with its statements on the case given its consistent involvement of cover-ups with the Police Commissioner and the Attorney-General and a fully-fledged Magisterial Inquiry would be ideal to establish the correct facts. Clearly, by now it is obvious that the Labour government cannot be trusted when it speaks on any matter related to the rule of law or criminal justice.
