On defence, the EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef is saying the exact opposite of his previous boss and Prime Minister Robert Abela. While the Prime Minister is accusing everyone concerned about Malta’s defence as a warmonger, his previous Chief of Staff just said on the National Broadcaster that Europe, including Malta, should ensure its security independence from the United States. Commissioner Micallef made his comments in reference to his statements that Malta’s cyber infrastructure was targeted by cyber attacks during the recent OSCE meeting held in Malta.
Malta can participate in the ReArm Europe programme to invest in its cyber-security including in the physical security of its communications infrastructure. Other benefits of investing in our defence and security through ReArm Europe programme include the potential investment in the security of out energy and electricity infrastructure. Only the Prime Minister and his goons are being reckless and irresponsible on defence. These are issues of national importance and priority and not partisan issues.
Malta receives intelligence on terrorism threats from the US, the British, the French and also Italy. For a number of years, France and Italy have been our main defence allies. Just like Europe needs to reduce its security dependence on the US, Malta also needs to reduce its security dependence on its allies. No is proposing to purchase warships and battle tanks, but having a proper intelligence service, equipping the Armed Forces and the Police with efficient cyber units, and ensuring the physical security of our infrastructure are simply matters of common sense.
