Foreign employee in Malta asked to pay €4,000 before changing job: many complain of violence and abuse

This isn’t a unique occurrence, but I am uploading this piece after I found a series of complaints and statements by third-country nationals in Malta describing the abuse they experienced from their employers and landlords. Some are even alleging they were hit and violently abused.

These statements have been posted in Facebook groups dedicated to foreigners in Malta. The statements have not been verified, but they give a very realistic picture of the experience of third-country nationals and it is well known by the Maltese that they are frequently abused.

Moreover, third-country nationals in Malta are in many cases being used as slave-labour with horrifying conditions. Many of them have to pay at least €4,000 to brokers just to get a working-visa in Malta, but many pay much higher fees that go up to €10,000. The abuse is rampant. It is also well known that many third-country nationals are being extorted high fees to change their employer.

I have long been proposing that Malta should reduce the abuse and vulnerability of third-country nationals by issuing visas against Maltese language certificates they would acquire in schools in their native countries. This would boost the number of people speaking Maltese and would also cut the abuse by the middle-men, not to mention creating a new educational industry.
