A heartbreaking accident in St Julian’s on Thursday claimed the life of 38-year-old mother Chantalle Gauci, who was fatally injured when her own car rolled backward and crushed her.
The tragic incident occurred in Triq L-Arċisqof Romero, just off Birkirkara Road, where Gauci was reportedly outside her vehicle while her six-year-old daughter remained inside. For reasons still under investigation, the car began to reverse, trapping Gauci underneath and causing fatal injuries. Despite the swift response of emergency medical teams, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sources confirmed that the child was unharmed in the accident, which shocked the local community. Police and forensic experts cordoned off the area to conduct an on-site investigation, and the road remained closed to traffic into the evening.
Tributes quickly poured in for Gauci, who lived in St Julian’s. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed her condolences in a heartfelt Facebook post. “A huge shock this evening. Rest in peace Chantalle,” she wrote, offering support to Gauci’s loved ones during this difficult time.
Her cousin, Kurt Vella Fonde, also shared a moving tribute. “Thank you for the joyful life you lived, for your passion for our family, for always offering yourself to keep us together,” he wrote. “May we who are still in shock and cannot find a meaning… find the courage to stay united and cherish every moment.”
Police investigations into what caused the vehicle to roll backward are ongoing.
