US presence in the Mediterranean to be reduced: cuts and withdrawals from Syria and Malta considered

The US Defence Department is considering cuts and withdrawals of its troops and resources in the Mediterranean as part of its re-prioiritisation efforts. US troops in Syria will be redeployed to Iraq, and cuts are also being planned at the US Embassy in Malta, which functions as a security and intelligence hub in cooperation with allies to monitor high-risk activities in North Africa and the Near East.

US security programmes in Libya may also face cuts, however US drone surveillance of Libyan military activity actually increased in the first part of this year. US intelligence and security officials in Malta were part of data-sharing and collaboration efforts with European allies on high-risk activity in the region but this collaborative work has started coming to an end earlier this year with some US officials and support already having been withdrawn.
