Photo of limbless Palestinian child by Samar Abu Elouf wins World Press Photo award

A photo by Samar Abu Elouf of 9-year-old Mahmoud Ajjour has won the World Press Photo award. Samar Abu Elouf is a Qatari journalist based in Gaza. Mahmoud Ajjour lost his limbs in March 2024 after he and his family were hit by a bomb while fleeing Gaza City.

The contest, held yearly and organised by the World Press Photo Organization, received 59,320 entries submitted by 3,778 photographers from 141 countries.

In a statement, Samar Abu Elouf said that it was very difficult for her to say that this is the winning photo of the World Press Photo Award because of the painful nature of the photo itself, the situation in Gaza and the injury that her photographer colleague Ihab Al-Bardini has suffered.

The photo was first published by The New York Times.
